Gul Panag to be Twitter Face for WIFW

Gul Panag is among the most regular celebrities on the social networking site Twitter and the actress is now taking it to the next level - she has been signed to post live updates of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW).

The critically acclaimed actress has been given the tag of the ‘Twitter Face’ for the event.

"I am proud to be associated with Wills Lifestyle in this unique way. I promise to bring to my fans and followers regular updates from the venue and to give them a glimpse of the event. Watch out for my tweets as you stand to win a chance to get invited to the event," said Gul.

Gul, who has featured in films like "Dor" and "Manorama Six Feet Under", will be present at the venue all five days of the fashion event to be held at Pragati Maidan.

She will connect with her followers on the website, share her views on the ramp shows, upload pictures of the event and respond to tweets.

"Gul Panag is a regular on Twitter and enjoys a lot of support and fan following on the website. Through this association we will be able to reach out to a large fan following on Twitter and create excitement around WIFW," said Atul Chand, divisional chief executive of ITC’s Lifestyle Retailing Business Division.

Asin replaces Gul Panag

'Ghajini' girl Asin is the new Tata Sky girl. She has replaced Gul Panag. The new ads will be aired around the 'Ghajini's' release, clearly making it a promotion strategy for the film.

When contacted Asin gave a knowing smile, saying, "I will only ask you to wait and watch. Right now I am busy with an assignment so if you like to hear more please get in touch at a later time." However, when Gul Panag was asked for an opinion, She said, "I have spent some very happy moments sharing screen space with Aamir Khan. I bear no ill feelings if Asin may have been chosen, about which at present I have no update. May be the concept they have now is more suited for them as a pair."

Aamir Khan has simply gone all out to promote upcoming film and to make it a big a success as is the case with his lat movie- Taare Zameen Par. And it looks that he has been sucessful in doing so. He has generated enough curiosity around the film to draw the audiences in.

Aamir Khan’s next release Ghajini is getting a lot of buzz. So much that his Ghajini counterpart, Southern sensation Asin will replace Aamir’s current partner Gul Panag in the Tata Sky commercials.

The South Indian hottie said, “Yes, you’re right. I have signed a deal with Tata Sky for their next television commercial opposite Aamir Khan, which goes on air on the 25th December. I haven’t shot for the advert. It should be anytime soon”.

Where does that leave old partner Gul Panag?

She said, “I know nothing about it. I endorse Tata Sky Plus and have shot three films with Aamir, two of which have already been aired. My commitment with them is for one year. Anything beyond that, Tata Sky knows best”.

The hotter side of Gul Panag

Former Miss India Gul Panag, mostly seen in de-glamorised acting roles, recently caught public attention by posing in a black lingerie for the cover page of Maxim, a magazine for men. Gul said she did it to show off the 'glamorous and real side' of her personality.

'It was not for a change in my image. I am very happy to have the image that I have. I am associated with a certain type of work and I don't want to change that ever. But what is important is that people should understand that what they see on screen and what I am are two different persons,' said Gul.

Gul has received critical acclaim for playing offbeat roles in films like 'Dor' and 'Manorama Six Feet Under', in which she was seen mostly in Indian attire.

'In reality, I am not that kind of person as shown in most of my films. I am not a village girl clad in 'saris' and 'salwar-kameez' in real life. I am a regular modern girl who is glamorous in real life and that's what I wanted to show. In fact, nobody has ever seen me in 'saris' and 'salwar-kameez' in real life,' said Gul who debuted with Parth Arora's Dhoop in 2003.

'I can look good in a bikini or any other sexy outfit or equally convincing in a nightie. That's the job of an actor,' she added.
Commenting upon her roles, she said: 'I believe that I'm extremely versatile as I can do power packed performances as well as look good as and when required. I don't want the people to be confused that the role that I have been playing in my films is what I am in real life. It's just the man who is playing the villain in films is not bad in real life.'

What made you say yes to Maxim?
'Why not? It's the highest selling men's magazine in the world,' she said.

Asked about her future plans, she said: 'It's not that I'll be doing more glamorous or power packed roles. It's about the offers. Glamour cannot be substance to a role. However, in most of my forthcoming films, I have glamorous roles.

'In Hello I am glamorous. I have two more films - Straight and Hello Darling - in which too I have glamorous roles.' The actress said she is playing a modern, urban young woman in 'Hello'. 'My character is neither black nor white. It has a huge amount of grey in her. In the story, she is stuck in a conflict in choosing between love and practicality.'

Based on novelist Chetan Bhagat's One Night At The Call Centre also stars Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sohail Khan, Isha Koppikar, Sharman Joshi, Amrita Arora and Arbaaz Khan.

Gul Panag has some fabulous performances to her credit like in Nagesh Kukunoor's 'Dor' as the strong willed Zeenat and in Navdeep Singh's 'Manorama Six Feet Under'. Yet, box-office success has always eluded this dimpled beauty.

"I have never been upset with the reactions at the box-office. I am a staunch believer of Karma yog. According to Lord Krishna, one must keep on doing his karma and not worry about the fruits," says Gul philosophically. "I try to give my best while shooting. Whatever happens after the release, whether the film becomes a success or not depends on the likings of the audience. So it does not affect me much," she adds.

But the rumours of her relationship with Sikandar Kher do seem to affect her as the lady is not very comfortable discussing it. "I know Sikandar since more than seven years. We have been very good friends and it is very understandable and natural to talk good about your friends. About the rumours, well there is no truth behind them. I am not comfortable discussing my personal life in public so I'd rather leave it at that," she says.

Nonetheless, Gul is all gaga over Sikandar's acting abilities. "Sikandar is a very good actor. In fact, he has turned out to be a better performer than I thought. We worked together in 'Summer 2007' and it was a very good experience," she says.

Sadly for the two, the good experience did not turn into good results at the box-office. But ever the optimist Gul has left the past behind and is looking forward to three more films this year. "I have three films releasing. First is Atul Agnihotri's 'Hello', after that is Parvati Balagopalan's 'Phir Zindagi' and then 'Straight' with Vinay Pathak.

I am also shooting for Manoj Tiwari's 'Hello Darling' and with Sanjay Suri in 'Anubhav'. Then there's a comedy on the anvil with Rajat Kapoor," she updates.

The first question that comes to the mind of so many people out there is - 'Why is Gul being seen in such outfits on print after being in the industry for so many years? Gul esponses is a desperate way, “Well, my answer is simple and straight - no one approached me to do such a shoot before! I was always game for it but then it had to be a magazine/publication of repute that could have made me say yes to getting into a night costume for a cover. Well, Maxim thought of me and I didn't have any reasons to say no”.

Why a desperate move?
“You must be kidding me! Me, getting desperate, and that too to see myself in a costume which is far less revealing than a swimming costume? Come on, give me a break! If you do a search on internet, some of the first few images would have me in a swimsuit. For someone who wore a swimsuit way back in 1999 for Miss Universe pageant, I can only laugh at the insinuation that I am being desperate. Now now now, I am not trying to be a 'born again' actress who suddenly decides to come out of a closet, leave her sari/salwar-suit behind and suddenly aim at becoming chic!”

A Tough Schedule for Gul Panag this Summer.

Gul Panag is staring at a busy summer ahead. That's because she is expecting two of her films - SUMMER 2007 and HELLO - to be virtually releasing back to back. Though both the films have been in the making for a little while, Gul is confident that the two films carry a distinct (and an original) theme and hence would manage to strike a chord with the audience.

"What's pretty much also works for me is that each of the two films is quite different from each other. Also my character in one film is completely in contrast with the other", reveals Gul who has always managed to get the attention of critics in each of her films, whether it is her debut film DHOOP, DOR or last year's MANORAMA - SIX FEET UNDER.

Laughs Gul, "This is why Atul Agnihotri (director of HELLO) was quite comfortable when I used to give a shot for the film. He used to tell me that he completely trusted me and hence didn't have to bother much about giving instructions or being extra cautious about how I was performing. He used to tell me that he was sure I would manage to impress people with my act yet again."

Coming to her films, while in HELLO, Gul Panag plays a call center employee, in SUMMER 2007 she plays the role of a rich girl who hates wealth. Both the films are looking at a June/July release.
